Low-Wind, Low-Sun Periods
Extended calm, cloudy stretches are the hardest hours for a renewable grid; firm clean generation is designed to cover them.
Grid planners have a name for the stretches when the wind is calm and the sky is overcast for days at a time: these low-renewable periods are the worst-case for a wind-and-solar grid. Output collapses across a wide area simultaneously, often in winter, sometimes coinciding with peak demand. Short-duration storage cannot cover a multi-day event; something must keep generating.
Why these periods are decisive
A grid is only as reliable as its performance during its worst events. A sustained low-wind, low-sun stretch can last several days over an entire region, so geographic spreading and daily batteries both fall short. Covering it requires either enormous long-duration storage or firm generation. Firm clean generation is the more scalable answer in most systems, and it is fusion's target role.
Honest framing
This is not an argument against renewables; it is an argument for pairing them with firm clean power. During most hours a renewables-heavy grid runs cleanly. It is the rare, sustained low-renewable event that firm generation exists to cover. Fusion is designed to provide that clean coverage, though as a design-and-simulation program it has not yet demonstrated it.

Design-and-simulation framing. The Kronos machines are today design and simulation studies: the breeder (Hyperion) and the burner (Aegis / MetroVolt). No hardware net-gain has been demonstrated. Breeder construction is planned to begin Q2 2027, with first-of-a-kind (FOAK) first tritium targeted around 2030. Comparisons on this page are qualitative and use only public, defensible figures; nothing here is a performance guarantee.
