Each source is judged on the same properties: whether it emits carbon at generation, whether it is firm, its land and water footprint, and its waste profile. Fusion is graded on the same ruler as everything else, with its open engineering gates shown, not hidden.
How to read it
No single source wins every row, and that is the point: a clean grid combines sources so their strengths cover each other's weaknesses. Renewables score highest on footprint and fuel but lowest on firmness; combustion scores firm but fails on emissions; firm clean sources aim to be strong on both, with their own material and, for fusion, availability caveats.
The honest fusion row
Fusion's scorecard: no CO₂ or combustion pollutants at generation; low lifecycle carbon; compact land and materials footprint per unit energy; short-lived, recyclable activated waste with no long-lived spent fuel; no meltdown or chain-reaction pathway. Its open gates: the burner's plug-coil overstress, extreme operating regime, ~400x helium-3 supply shortfall, and availability short of Tier III — and the fact that the machines are not yet built.

Design-and-simulation framing. The Kronos machines are today design and simulation studies: the breeder (Hyperion) and the burner (Aegis / MetroVolt). No hardware net-gain has been demonstrated. Breeder construction is planned to begin Q2 2027, with first-of-a-kind (FOAK) first tritium targeted around 2030. Comparisons on this page are qualitative and use only public, defensible figures; nothing here is a performance guarantee.
