Interconnection Delays
Grid interconnection queues can be long; on-site firm generation lets a campus proceed while relying on the grid only as a smaller, backup connection.
Waiting in the queue
Connecting a large load or a large generator to the grid requires studies, upgrades, and a place in an interconnection queue that in many regions stretches for years. For a data center racing to deploy compute, that queue can be the pacing constraint, independent of whether power exists to serve it.
On-site firm generation changes what the queue must deliver. A campus that generates most of its own power needs the grid only as a backup and balancing connection, which is smaller and often faster to secure than a full-requirements interconnection sized for the entire continuous load. The burner supplies the base; the grid tie is the contingency.
This does not make the connection optional — the availability gate means the grid backup is essential to reach Tier III. But a smaller backup interconnection is a lighter ask of a congested queue than a connection that must carry every megawatt every hour. It also gives the site the option to island if the connection is delayed or the grid is weak.
The honest framing avoids any economic or schedule guarantee and simply notes the physical decoupling: on-site firm power reduces the campus's dependence on the pace of grid interconnection, without removing the need for a secured backup path.
