Brownfield And Greenfield Siting

MetroVolt can be sited on new greenfield campuses or on brownfield sites near existing loads and grid; its low water use and compact footprint widen where it fits.

Where a burner can go

Large loads are built both on greenfield land and on brownfield sites — former industrial or generation land near existing infrastructure. Each has trade-offs: greenfield offers space and flexibility; brownfield offers existing grid connections, water rights, and proximity to demand. A source's physical needs determine which sites it can use.

The burner widens the feasible set because it needs very little water and has a compact footprint — direct energy conversion removes the steam cycle and cooling pond, and the low-neutron D-³He burn keeps shielding bounded. That makes water-scarce and land-constrained sites, which exclude conventional thermal plants, potentially viable.

Brownfield sites near existing substations are especially attractive because they come with the grid connection the availability gate requires as backup. Reusing an existing interconnection can ease the queue problem while still allowing on-site firm generation for the base load.

The honest limits are the shielding envelope and the need for a secured backup tie: the burner is compact but not zero-footprint, and it is never a sole source, The widened siting set is therefore real but conditional: it opens water- and land-constrained locations that exclude conventional thermal plants, provided each candidate can host the shielding envelope and a firm backup tie.
