No High-Level Waste
Fusion generates no heat-producing, long-lived high-level waste, because it has no fissile fuel and no actinide inventory.
The clearest, most defensible statement in the fusion waste case is this: fusion produces no high-level waste. High-level waste is the heat-generating, long-lived material that defines the fission back-end and drives the need for deep geological repositories. It comes from spent nuclear fuel and the actinides bred within it. Fusion has neither.
Why the category is empty for fusion
- No fissile fuel: fusion burns hydrogen isotopes, not uranium or plutonium, so there is no spent fuel to begin with.
- No actinides: without uranium in the machine, there is no neutron capture chain building up plutonium, americium, and the other long-lived, heat-producing actinides.
- No chain reaction: the reaction products are helium and neutrons, not a spectrum of fission products.
This is not a claim that fusion is waste-free. It produces low-level and some intermediate-level activated material, and it handles tritium as a special stream. But the absence of high-level waste is a physics fact about the fuel cycle, not a design achievement that could be undone by an off-normal event. There is simply no actinide source term to create it.
This is also the most robust claim to make publicly, because it cannot be undone by an operating error or an off-normal event: an actinide inventory that was never created cannot appear. The empty high-level category is a permanent property of the fuel cycle, not a performance target that must be maintained.
For both Kronos machines this is the anchor of the waste story: whatever the details of activation and material choice, neither the breeder nor the burner can generate high-level waste, because neither contains fissile material. This is a design-and-simulation position consistent with the physics of D–T and D–³He fuel cycles.
