Fusion vs Fission Waste: An Honest Comparison

Fusion produces no high-level waste and no actinides, but it does produce activated material and tritium — both statements are true.

Comparisons between fusion and fission waste are often overstated in both directions. The defensible, honest position is precise: fusion avoids the categories that define fission's back-end, but it is not waste-free. Stating both halves is what makes the comparison credible.

The comparison is strongest when it is narrowest: fusion's defensible claim is about the categories its fuel cycle cannot produce, not about winning a volume contest whose assumptions can be argued. Anchoring the comparison to physics — no fissile fuel, therefore no actinides and no high-level waste — keeps it beyond reasonable dispute, and it is why this site states the absent categories rather than any contested comparative multiplier.

This site deliberately avoids contested quantitative claims — such as any “cleaner than X by a factor” headline — because those depend on assumptions that invite dispute. The claims here rest on fuel-cycle physics: no fissile fuel means no actinides and no high-level waste, full stop. That is enough, and it is defensible without exaggeration.
