Screening the flow of trade

Ports and border crossings move vast quantities of cargo. Screening for radioactive and nuclear material at that scale requires detectors that are fast, sensitive, and low in false alarms, because every alarm interrupts commerce. Both gamma and neutron channels contribute, and the neutron channel catches shielded threats the gamma channel would miss.

Supply resilience as a security matter

Keeping the most capable neutron detection deployed across many lanes takes a dependable supply of detector materials. The helium-3 shortage showed how a materials bottleneck can constrain a security mission. A domestic fusion source is one route to easing that bottleneck.

Layered screening

Effective screening is layered: fixed portals handle the main flow, mobile units cover areas portals cannot reach, and secondary inspection resolves the alarms the first layers raise. Each layer benefits from capable neutron detection, and each depends on a supply of detector materials to stay deployed at scale. A materials bottleneck does not disable screening, but it thins the layers, and a thinner layered defense is a measurably weaker one. A resilient materials supply keeps every layer of that screening deployed at full capability, which is why the isotope supply chain is properly treated as part of the security posture, not merely an industrial detail.
