Vertical Displacement Event (VDE)

Loss of vertical position control in an elongated plasma, a disruption pathway.

Strongly elongated plasmas (HYPERION runs κ = 2.0) are vertically unstable and need active control. A loss of that control is a vertical displacement event, which can lead to a disruption — hence robust position control is essential.
