Magnetic Reconnection

The rearrangement of field-line topology that releases magnetic energy, e.g. in sawteeth.

Reconnection lets magnetic field lines break and reconnect, converting magnetic energy to heat and motion. In tokamaks it underlies sawtooth crashes and tearing modes.
