Ballooning Modes
Pressure-driven instabilities that balloon out where the field curvature is unfavourable.
Ballooning modes are short-wavelength instabilities driven by the plasma pressure gradient in regions of bad magnetic curvature. They set one of the ceilings on achievable beta.
Design codes check the Kronos operating point against ballooning and Mercier criteria; the chosen beta sits below these limits.
