Aegis is the shorter housing of the Kronos burner, aimed at defense bases and forward installations that need firm power independent of fuel convoys and vulnerable grid ties. It runs the low-neutron D–³He fuel and converts the charged products directly to electricity.
It is a fixed-site generator. Kronos evaluated a shipboard variant and closed it as not feasible (it would need more straight-line length than a warship hull allows), so Aegis is delivered by rail and assembled on site — the way DoD-sited reactors have always been delivered — on a folded footprint of about 1.66 acres. Because D–³He is low-neutron, the first wall lasts a long time and availability is limited by plug reliability rather than neutron damage.
