Former Director of the UW–Madison Fusion Technology Institute and a pioneer of D–³He fusion — he achieved the first steady-state nuclear fusion in an inertial-electrostatic-confinement device using helium-3 fuel. A long-time champion of lunar helium-3 resources, he chaired NASA panels on space-based resources.
