Superconducting Magnet Engineer (REBCO / HTS)
MagnetsFull-timeLos Angeles, CA (hybrid)
Design the high-field REBCO magnets at the heart of both machines — the breeder center stack and the burner's high-field plug.
About the role
Kronos's design points demand fields at the edge of what magnet technology allows — 16.84 T peak on the breeder, 26.49 T at the burner plug. You'll design the coils, honestly confront the structural and conductor-stress gates, and help engineer the architecture that closes them.
What you'll do
- Design and analyze HTS/REBCO coils toward the design-point fields.
- Own the electromagnetic and structural stress analysis, including the open magnet-stress gate.
- Develop winding, jointing, quench-protection, and preload strategies.
- Work the graded / stress-managed coil architecture with structures and cryogenics.
- Support the magnet supply-chain and qualification plan.
- State magnet feasibility honestly — including what is not yet buildable as specified.
What you bring
- Experience designing superconducting or very-high-field magnets.
- Strong electromagnetic and structural/mechanical analysis skills.
- Familiarity with HTS conductors (REBCO tape) and quench physics.
- Comfort operating at the frontier of materials limits.
- Bonus: fusion or accelerator magnet experience.
Compensation
Compensation discussed early in the process; California pay range provided on request.
