Model the neutrons that define a fusion machine — transport, shielding, activation, and the damage budget that sets component lifetime.
About the role
14 MeV neutrons drive the breeder's whole value proposition and much of its engineering. As neutronics engineer you'll quantify where the neutrons go, what they activate, and how long components last — feeding tritium-breeding studies, shielding design, waste classification, and the roadmap toward a live neutronics twin.
What you'll do
- Run Monte-Carlo neutron-transport analyses (e.g. MCNP/OpenMC-class) for both machines.
- Quantify tritium breeding, displacement damage (dpa), helium production, and activation inventory.
- Design shielding and support the low-activation materials strategy.
- Feed neutronics into lifetime, maintenance, and licensing analyses.
- Prototype fast surrogates toward a real-time neutronics/activation twin.
- Document everything to a regulatory-grade standard.
What you bring
- Degree in nuclear engineering, physics, or related field.
- Experience with Monte-Carlo transport codes and nuclear data.
- Familiarity with activation/depletion analysis and shielding design.
- Careful, auditable, reproducible workmanship.
- Bonus: fusion blanket or tritium-breeding experience.
