Engineer the vessel and structures that hold the machine together against magnetic, thermal, and vacuum loads.
About the role
The vacuum vessel, supports, and structural backbone carry enormous, coupled loads. You'll design and analyze these structures, manage the load paths from the magnets, and ensure the machine is buildable, maintainable, and safe.
What you'll do
- Design the vacuum vessel, supports, and primary structural systems.
- Perform structural, thermal, and seismic analysis (FEA).
- Manage magnetic and thermal load paths across the machine.
- Design for assembly, remote maintenance, and component replacement.
- Own tolerances, materials, and code compliance (e.g. ASME).
- Collaborate with magnets, cryogenics, and neutronics on integration.
What you bring
- Degree in mechanical or structural engineering.
- Strong FEA and hand-calculation skills.
- Experience with pressure vessels, vacuum systems, or large machines.
- Design-for-manufacturability and maintainability instinct.
- Bonus: nuclear or fusion machine experience; PE license.
Compensation
Compensation discussed early in the process; California pay range provided on request.
