Own the materials that live under 14 MeV neutrons — first wall, breeding blanket, and the low-activation choices behind them.
About the role
The wall and blanket are lifetime-limiting and safety-defining. You'll evaluate candidate materials for damage, activation, and tritium behavior, support blanket-coverage and breeding-ratio studies, and define the materials-qualification program that turns open questions into answers.
What you'll do
- Evaluate first-wall and blanket materials for radiation damage, activation, and lifetime.
- Support tritium-breeding-ratio, Li-6 enrichment, and neutron-multiplier studies.
- Assess the hafnium-carbide / refractory first-wall and structural options.
- Define the materials-qualification needs and the path to close them.
- Partner with neutronics, fuel cycle, and magnets on integrated design.
- Contribute to the honest gates on materials readiness.
What you bring
- Background in radiation materials science or nuclear materials.
- Familiarity with dpa/activation analysis and low-activation alloys.
- Experience with irradiation testing or materials modeling.
- Rigor and reproducibility as instinct, not afterthought.
- Bonus: fusion blanket or plasma-facing-component experience.
Compensation
Compensation discussed early in the process; California pay range provided on request.
