Independent expert critique before and after publication is how a field decides which claims to provisionally trust.
What Peer Review Is For
Peer review asks independent experts to judge whether a claim is sound, novel, and supported by its evidence before it enters the literature. It is a filter, not a proof: reviewers check reasoning and methods but rarely rerun the computation. Passing review means a claim cleared a bar of scrutiny, not that it is certainly true.
What Reviewers Can and Cannot Catch
- Can catch: flawed logic, inappropriate methods, overreaching conclusions, missing controls, unsupported claims.
- Struggle to catch: fabricated data, subtle code bugs, errors requiring rerunning the analysis, honest mistakes buried in detail.
Scrutiny Beyond the Journal
Formal peer review is one moment in a longer process. Post-publication scrutiny, replication attempts, reanalysis of shared data, and public critique, does the deeper work of sorting durable findings from fragile ones. A result confirmed independently by others is far stronger than one that merely passed review once.
The Limits of Consensus
Consensus is evidence, not proof; fields have been wrong together, and lone dissenters have been right. The value of scrutiny is not that experts vote but that claims are exposed to critics motivated to find flaws. A claim that has survived determined attempts to break it has earned provisional trust.
