Falsifiability

A claim earns scientific standing by risking refutation; a theory that forbids nothing explains nothing.

The Demarcation Idea

Associated with Karl Popper, falsifiability holds that a scientific claim must forbid some observable outcome. If no possible result would count against it, the claim is unfalsifiable and outside the reach of empirical test. The strength of a theory lies not in what it can accommodate but in what it rules out and thereby risks.

Bold Predictions Are Valuable

A theory that makes a sharp, risky prediction, one that could easily have come out otherwise, tells you a great deal if it survives. A theory flexible enough to fit any outcome tells you nothing, because it took no risk. This is why a precise quantitative prediction is worth more than a vague qualitative one.

Why It Guards Against Self-Deception

The discipline of stating in advance what would prove you wrong is a defense against fitting the story to the result after the fact. A prediction registered before the data protects against the temptation to reinterpret any outcome as a success.

Design claims are stated with the specific conditions and gates under which they hold, and open reconciliations are flagged rather than hidden, so a reader can see what evidence would count against them. A claim tied to a testable gate, such as FOAK first tritium, is falsifiable in exactly this sense: the hardware can fail to meet it.
