Earning the Right to Decide
Using a simulation to make a design decision is a claim that the simulation is trustworthy enough for the stakes involved. Credibility is the evidence that supports that claim. It is not a property of the code alone but of the whole chain: how well the code is verified, how well the model is validated for the relevant regime, how the uncertainties are quantified, and how honestly the scope of the prediction is stated.
The Evidence Chain
- Verification: the code solves its equations correctly, shown by order-of-accuracy and convergence tests.
- Validation: the model matches experiment in the relevant regime, within combined uncertainty.
- Uncertainty: the prediction carries an error budget, not a bare number.
- Scope: the domain of applicability is stated, and extrapolation beyond it is flagged.
Maturity, Not Pass/Fail
Credibility is a matter of degree. Frameworks such as predictive-capability maturity models rate a prediction on multiple axes rather than stamping it credible or not. A prediction can be strong on verification but weak on validation because the experiments do not yet exist, and the honest response is to report the maturity on each axis rather than an overall verdict that hides the weak spot.
Honest Scope at Kronos
The Hyperion breeder and the burner concepts are design and simulation, not built hardware. Their credibility for design decisions rests on verified solvers, physics validated against existing devices and experiments where possible, and reproducible published deposits. Where a claim depends on the machine itself, such as first-of-a-kind net behavior, it is presented as a design projection with stated gates, not as a validated result. Naming that boundary is not a weakness in the credibility case; it is what makes the case credible.
A design decision made on a simulation should be traceable to this full chain. When it is, the decision can be defended and revisited as evidence improves; when it is not, the decision rests on hope.
