Advanced-fuel / helium-3 / aneutronic fusion

Dr. Gerald Kulcinski is one of Kronos's three founding partners in science, and a specialist in advanced-fuel fusion — the field of running reactions that minimize or eliminate neutrons, including deuterium–helium-3 and the physics of helium-3 as a fusion fuel. His domain is the intellectual foundation of the Kronos fuel choice.

That expertise anchors the most distinctive decision in the design: running a low-neutron, D–³He fuel cycle rather than conventional deuterium–tritium — the choice that makes direct energy conversion worthwhile and drives down activation and shielding. It also informs the helium-3 sourcing strategy (in-situ breeding via catalyzed D–D) and the gated p–¹¹B endpoint on the fuel roadmap.

Dr. Kulcinski directs the University of Wisconsin–Madison Fusion Technology Institute, where his group has built and operated inertial-electrostatic-confinement (IEC) fusion devices and demonstrated steady-state deuterium–helium-3 fusion — confirmed by detecting the reaction's characteristic 14.7 MeV protons. That decades-long, hands-on record in advanced-fuel and helium-3 fusion is the intellectual foundation of the Kronos low-neutron D–³He fuel choice.
