Fusion Breeding as a Supply Answer

A fusion program that breeds and manages tritium produces helium-3 as a decay product, offering a source of the isotope decoupled from legacy stockpiles.

The structural argument

Helium-3 scarcity is not a mining problem but a consequence of the isotope's origin: it comes almost entirely from the decay of tritium, and tritium is scarce and tightly held. Any activity that produces and stores meaningful quantities of tritium therefore also produces helium-3 over time. A deuterium-tritium fusion program is exactly such an activity, because it breeds tritium in a lithium blanket to fuel itself.

How fusion breeds tritium

Kronos motion — quantum supply

In a deuterium-tritium system, fusion neutrons strike lithium in a surrounding blanket, and lithium captures neutrons to produce tritium. A design target for self-sufficiency is a tritium breeding ratio above one, meaning more tritium is bred than consumed. Kronos frames its breeder machine, Hyperion, a deuterium-tritium spherical tokamak, around this function, with a design tritium breeding ratio of 1.8. Tritium handled and stored in such a system continuously decays to helium-3 at the fixed 12.3-year rate described under tritium decay.

Why this decouples supply

Because the helium-3 would arise from tritium bred for fusion rather than from decades-old weapons stockpiles, the supply would be tied to fusion activity rather than to legacy inventories. In principle this makes the source scalable with the fusion enterprise itself rather than fixed by history, addressing the inelasticity that defines the current market.

Honest framing

This is a structural argument about the origin of the isotope, not a claim about built hardware. Kronos machines are design and simulation studies; construction of the breeder is planned to begin in the second quarter of 2027, with first tritium from the first-of-a-kind unit projected around 2030, and no hardware net-gain claim is made before that milestone. The helium-3 supply implication follows from the physics of tritium decay wherever tritium is bred and stored.
