A hot plasma radiates a large amount of its energy as light — X-rays from bremsstrahlung and microwaves from synchrotron emission. Photonic energy capture aims to recover some of that radiated power directly, converting the photons to electricity in specialized capture surfaces rather than simply letting it heat the wall.
Kronos MetroVolt includes photonic capture (deposited analysis S19) as a stage of its multi-modal conversion train. It complements the reflective HfC first wall, which already recycles most synchrotron radiation back into the plasma: what the wall doesn't reflect, and the bremsstrahlung that must be absorbed, becomes a target for recovery rather than pure loss — one more slice the converter reclaims.
