Heavy industry — steelmaking, cement, and bulk chemicals — is one of the toughest emissions problems in the economy. These processes need enormous quantities of firm, high-grade heat and power, run continuously, often at temperatures electricity struggles to reach cheaply. Intermittent renewables are a poor fit.
Firm fusion power addresses the core difficulty. A plant can supply both continuous clean electricity and high-grade process heat, co-located with an industrial site thanks to fusion's siting flexibility and lack of an evacuation zone. For electrified processes (electric arc steelmaking, electrochemistry) it provides the firm power; for heat-driven ones it can provide the heat.
