Controlled-environment agriculture — indoor and vertical farms — can grow food anywhere, year-round, using far less land and water than field farming. Its constraint is energy: the lighting and climate control demand large, steady, affordable power, and intermittent supply makes the economics hard.
Firm fusion power is a strong fit. A firm, clean supply lets these energy-intensive farms run continuously at low carbon intensity, and a fusion plant's usable heat (and even CO₂ handling) could support the growing environment. Its siting flexibility means it can sit near the population it feeds.
Pairing firm clean power with local food production could improve food security and resilience — growing more food closer to where it's eaten, independent of climate and long supply chains. It's a less obvious but genuine application of firm, siteable clean energy.
