Does fusion produce any CO₂?

Does a fusion plant emit carbon dioxide?
No — fusion produces zero CO₂ or air pollution while generating electricity. The reaction combines hydrogen isotopes into helium; there is no combustion and no carbon involved.
What about building it?
Like any power plant — including solar and wind — there are one-time embodied emissions from manufacturing the steel, concrete, and components. But over a 30-year operating life producing gigawatt-scale firm power, those are small per unit of energy, and there are no ongoing fuel or operating emissions.
So is it genuinely low-carbon?
Yes. Fusion is a firm, dispatchable, near-zero-carbon source — the combination a decarbonizing grid needs to replace fossil baseload.
