Is fusion energy clean and renewable?

Fusion emits no CO₂, produces no long-lived waste, and runs on effectively inexhaustible fuel — clean by any measure, and effectively renewable.

By every practical measure fusion is clean: no operating emissions, no long-lived waste, and inexhaustible fuel. Its distinctive value in a clean-energy system is firmness — the always-on quality that intermittent renewables lack.

Questions & answers

Is fusion clean?
Yes. A fusion plant emits no carbon dioxide or air pollution while operating, and produces no long-lived radioactive waste — only structural materials that decay to recyclable levels in about a century. A low-neutron design like Kronos produces even less.
Is fusion renewable?
Effectively, yes. Its fuel is so abundant as to be inexhaustible on any human timescale: deuterium comes from seawater and Kronos breeds its own helium-3. Whether that counts as 'renewable' by strict definitions is a semantic debate; in practice the fuel will never run out.
How does it compare to solar and wind?
Fusion complements them. Solar and wind are clean but intermittent; fusion is clean and firm — available on demand, day or night. A decarbonized grid needs both cheap intermittent power and firm clean power behind it.
