Demountable Magnets

Demountable joints let a fusion magnet be opened for maintenance and assembly — a practical advantage of REBCO that Kronos builds into its winding pack.

What
Magnets with joints that can be opened
Enabled by
REBCO HTS (unlike welded LTS coils)
Benefit
Serviceable magnets and vessel access
Kronos pack
Graded and demountable

Demountable magnets are superconducting coils built with joints that can be disconnected and reconnected, rather than permanently welded into a single closed loop. This is difficult with conventional low-temperature superconductors but practical with HTS tape — and it changes how a reactor can be built and maintained.

Kronos MetroVolt's REBCO winding pack is graded and demountable: the coil can be opened to access the vacuum vessel and internal components, and damaged sections can be serviced rather than requiring the whole magnet to be scrapped. For a plant that must achieve high availability over decades, serviceable magnets are a meaningful practical advantage — one more benefit that flows from the HTS choice.
