First plasma is the milestone when a new fusion device successfully creates and confines its first plasma — proof the machine works and the start of its commissioning and experimental program. It's a genuine and celebrated achievement, and a useful marker of real progress.

But it's important to be precise about what it does not mean: first plasma is not net energy, not full performance, and not commercial operation. Those come later, as the device is brought up to its design parameters and its predictions are tested.
