Because tritium is radioactive and chemically mobile, the amount of it held on site is one of the most scrutinized safety and licensing quantities for any fusion plant. A large tritium inventory drives containment requirements, accident analysis, and regulatory burden.
This is another place the Kronos D–³He choice pays off. With no breeding blanket and only a modest, staged tritium role (commissioning and as a ³He precursor), the MetroVolt design keeps its tritium inventory small relative to a D–T plant that must breed and cycle kilograms of it. The direct-internal-recovery fuel loop and processing systems are sized to keep that working inventory tight — an engineering-controlled hazard, honestly accounted for.
