The fuel-processing plant handles the deuterium, bred helium-3, and small amounts of tritium that cycle through the reactor — separating isotopes, storing fuel, and accounting for every gram of tritium (a regulated material). How large and complex it is depends heavily on the fuel choice.
Because Kronos runs D–³He with no breeding blanket, its tritium inventory is small — a fraction of what a D–T plant, which must breed and cycle kilograms of tritium, requires. The direct-internal-recovery loop recycles unburned fuel at over 95% single-pass (prediction P4), keeping the working inventory tight and losses low.
A smaller tritium inventory means a lighter containment, licensing, and safety burden — one of the quieter but real advantages of the low-neutron, blanket-free design. See is tritium dangerous?
