Has anyone achieved net-energy fusion?
At the reaction level, yes — the 2022 NIF experiment released more fusion energy than the laser delivered to the target. Plant-level net energy, counting all inputs, has not yet been demonstrated.

Has fusion ever produced net energy?
It depends on where you draw the boundary. In 2022 the U.S. National Ignition Facility achieved 'scientific ignition' — the fusion energy released exceeded the laser energy delivered to the fuel target. That was a landmark. But it did not count the enormous energy the lasers themselves consumed, so it was not net energy at the plant level.
So is commercial net energy solved?
No. The remaining challenge is engineering net energy — delivering more electricity to the grid than the whole plant consumes, continuously and economically. That's the bar every commercial fusion program, including Kronos, is working toward.
Where does Kronos stand?
Kronos is a design at the validation stage. Its design point targets an engineering gain (Q_eng) of about 2.1–2.7 — net-positive at the plant level — but this is a design-point figure to be proven at the gates, not a measured result.
