The magnetic field inside a coil varies with position, so a smart magnet doesn't use the same conductor everywhere. A graded winding pack tailors the conductor — its reinforcement, its current density — layer by layer to the local field, using material efficiently where the field is weaker and reinforcing where it is strongest. This keeps the mechanical strain within safe bounds without over-building the whole magnet.
Kronos MetroVolt's REBCO winding pack is both graded and demountable. Grading is what lets it run at 0.252% peak strain against the 0.40% irreversible limit — a 1.59× margin — at the 24.6 T operating point (analysis S47), and it is one of the two defenses (with the strain clamp) that the design offers for its stated peak-field technology gap.
