Batteries shift energy across hours; fusion generates firm energy continuously. They solve different problems — and storage can't affordably cover multi-day or seasonal gaps.

Batteries and fusion are often mentioned together, but they do fundamentally different jobs. A battery shifts energy in time — storing surplus renewable power for later — but generates nothing. Fusion generates firm power continuously. A clean grid needs both, plus renewables.

Storage is excellent for smoothing hourly swings, but covering the multi-day lulls and seasonal shortfalls of a renewables-heavy grid with batteries alone means enormous, rarely-used capacity. A firm generator running at high capacity factor is the cheaper way to guarantee those hours — which is fusion's role alongside, not instead of, storage.
