Aviation is one of the hardest sectors to decarbonize, because aircraft need the high energy density of liquid fuel — batteries are too heavy for anything but short flights. Fusion won't power an aircraft directly, but it can attack the problem from the fuel side.
The route to clean aviation runs through synthetic e-fuels and hydrogen — and both are viable only with abundant, firm, cheap clean electricity. Firm fusion power lets the energy-intensive fuel synthesis run at high utilization, the key to affordable e-fuels, and its DC-native output suits the electrolysis step.
So fusion's contribution to aviation is indirect but real: firm clean power to manufacture the drop-in fuels that let existing and future aircraft fly without fossil carbon. It's a prime example of firm fusion enabling decarbonization well beyond the electricity grid.
