Can a fusion reactor explode or melt down?
No. Fusion has no chain reaction and holds only seconds of fuel — any interruption stops the reaction. There is no meltdown or explosion pathway.
Fusion's safety case is structural, not procedural: the physics itself prevents runaway. A plasma is extraordinarily hard to keep burning, so the failure mode is that it stops — the opposite of a fission excursion. This passive safety is one of fusion's most important advantages.

Can a fusion reactor melt down?
No. A meltdown requires a self-sustaining chain reaction producing decay heat, as in fission. Fusion has no chain reaction. The plasma contains only seconds of fuel at any moment, and losing confinement, heating, or fuel supply simply extinguishes it — the reaction fails safe.
Could it explode?
No. There is no explosive mechanism — the amount of fuel in the chamber at any instant is tiny, and fusion conditions are so hard to maintain that any disturbance stops the reaction rather than accelerating it. The engineered hazards (magnet energy, tritium) are controlled, not accident-scale.
So what are the real safety considerations?
Managing tritium, the stored energy in the magnets, and residual neutron activation of the structure — all engineering-controlled hazards. Because Kronos is low-neutron, the activation side is much smaller than in a D–T plant.
