Balance of plant is everything outside the reactor core — cooling, power conditioning, controls. Direct energy conversion shrinks it versus a steam plant.

Balance of plant (BOP) is the catch-all term for everything a power station needs beyond its energy source: cooling systems, power conditioning, control rooms, the cryogenic plant, and — in a conventional thermal station — the turbines, condensers, and heat-transfer loops of the steam cycle. BOP is a large fraction of any plant's cost and footprint.
Kronos MetroVolt's direct-energy-conversion approach meaningfully shrinks the BOP: with no steam cycle there is no turbine hall or massive heat-transfer loop, and the DC-native output simplifies power conditioning. What remains — the cryoplant, cooling, controls, and fuel processing — is still substantial, but a DC-native, thermally-light design is structurally leaner than a fusion plant bolted to a steam turbine.
