Martin Owens

BOARD ADVISOR, Chief Strategy Officer - Advanced Nuclear Reactors

Martin Owens is a seasoned expert in advanced nuclear reactors, serving as a Board Advisor and Chief Strategy Officer for Kronos Fusion Energy. He is currently the Senior Director of the Capital Project Execution Organization at Los Alamos National Laboratory and resides in New Mexico. Martin's extensive experience in managing and directing nuclear reactor and fuel development programs makes him a valuable asset to our team. Martin earned a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Old Dominion University in 1984.


He began his career as an Engineer and Project Manager at BWXT Nuclear Operations Group, Inc., where he worked from 1985 to 2006. During his tenure at BWXT, Martin contributed to the development of a nuclear rocket for the Air Force's Star Wars Program and gained a DOD Secret clearance, which has since expired. He also spent four years directing the IT department, managing network, hardware, and software systems for a 3000-employee Naval Nuclear classified facility under the Naval Reactor program requirements.


In addition, Martin managed R&D at BWXT and developed the modular high temperature gas reactor for the DOE's new tritium production program. He also spent two years as a Liaison Manager at Naval Reactor Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory, working on the development of futuristic nuclear technologies. In 2007, Martin joined AREVA Federal Services as a Program and Project Manager and served in this role for eight years. He was promoted to Project Director in 2015, overseeing Nuclear Reactor and Fuel Development Programs.


Martin obtained his Master of Business Administration and Global Management from Ashford University in 2016.From 2019 to 2021, Martin worked as the EPC Director for GE-Hitachi Nuclear Energy International LLC before taking on his current role at Los Alamos National Laboratory in 2021. Throughout his career, Martin has accumulated over 35 years of experience in various high-consequence energy government and commercial programs, including:


  • Development of three cutting-edge Naval Reactors (Seawolf, Virginia, Ford Super Carrier) at BWXT.

  • Leadership in the BWXT Naval Reactor Program, focusing on engineering, operations, and projects.

  • Involvement in the DOE Yucca Mountain Geological Nuclear Disposal Site Project. Direction of IT Department responsible for classified network at BWXT.

  • Participation in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Nuclear Power Site Investigation & Modeling Desert Environment.

  • EPC development to commercial for GE Hitachi BWRX-300MW Advanced Small Modular Reactor.

  • Siting, Licensing, and EPC for AREVA Evolutionary Power Reactor 1600MW at four US utility sites.


Martin's wealth of knowledge and experience in advanced nuclear reactor technologies and project management make him an invaluable addition to the Kronos Fusion Energy team. As a Board Advisor and Chief Strategy Officer, Martin's expertise will play a crucial role in driving the company's strategic vision and ensuring the successful development and commercialization of our fusion energy generators.
